Time of the Moonflower: Expanding Our Consciousness through the Dark Night of the Soul
Gemma Summers & Shushann Movsessian
As we struggle to solve our problems, we are drawn deeper into ourselves, eventually having to find inner resources we didn’t know we had. We are required to let go of what we thought we knew and open up to the unknown, to something greater than ourselves.
The Dark Night journey has been understood by mystics, seekers, shamans, pilgrims, artists and healers throughout history. It’s a difficult time of prolonged stress, with no easy answers. It’s something we must face and grapple with over time, being cooked in an emotional and psychological pressure-cooker.
Perhaps you’ve had your own Dark Night experience and were transformed by it in ways that you were eventually grateful for. Or perhaps it left you feeling disturbed and hurt, and wondering why you had to have this experience.
How do you survive and find your way through a Dark Night, and even benefit from it?
Moonflower: Symbol of Blooming in Dark Times
The Moonflower is a fitting symbol for the growth-potential of our own Dark Night as we allow the process to transform us, activating unknown and deep powers within us, pollinating something new in our soul.
The future of our life often depends on how we approach our Dark Night journey. It can either leave us feeling lost and debilitated, or it can activate hidden potentials in us, liberating us from old beliefs and delusions and freeing us to live a new life.
Common Questions People Ask About the Dark Night:
- How do I manage a prolonged Dark Night while having a full life and earning a living?
- How do I transform painful emotions into the alchemical gold of a renewed life?
- How can a Dark Night empower and energise me, rather than defeat me?
These and other questions we answer in our 4-part audio program.
Why Join Our Dark Night of the Soul Program?
The Dark Night is actually a profound opportunity to change your life and expand into the fullness of your own night-blooming flowers—your own hidden creative gifts and spiritual power.
These gifts and powers often don’t’ emerge until they’re activated by the challenges of the Dark Night.
In the darkest of times is when the we discover our inner light, the true source of our power. A part of us may feel like it’s dying, but another part is preparing to be born.
“There are times when we are faced with a major curve ball that we don’t seem able to transcend. We may even feel out of control. But from a soul perspective, we are being asked to open up, to expand who we thought we were, and how life should be.”
Whether through loss, illness, divorce, conflict or trauma, these dark passages mark a time of death and rebirth. By using the tools and information offered in this program, you can discover how to use the Dark Night to clean up your life, release toxic situations, resolve old wounds and issues, and make empowering new choices.
“Heartfelt thanks for the Moonflower Series. I found this work to be life changing, like having the key to secret knowledge, vital information that has been part of women’s inheritance since the beginning of time, decoded and updated to be relevant now. The series reinforces my one on-one-sessions with Gemma, making them even more valuable, allowing the content to be absorbed at a deeper level, and in my own time. Thank you for providing intuitive and clear explanations of situations that can be confronting to us all, with practical solutions to help women on their personal journeys. Love and thanks.” K.G. What’s In Our 4-Part Series
Introduction to Time of the Moonflower (60 minutes)
Our one-hour introduction provides an overview of the program, as well as introducing the presenters, Gemma and Shushann, and what led them to create this unique series.
Session 1: Entering the Dark Night: The Gathering Storm (60 minutes)
Sacred Power: Radical Faith and Building the Heart Energies
We tend to underestimate the impact of the Dark Night, thinking it’s just a passing storm. A little disruptive perhaps, but manageable and quickly over. But the Dark Night is often a protracted state of affairs that will change our lives.
We sometimes need to baton down the hatches and prepare to ride out the longest storm of our life.
This journey calls us to develop Radical Faith, a power that helps us tolerate an uncertain future as we grapple with the demands of the journey.
The Mystic’s Journey: St John of the Cross
We’ll explore John’s Dark Night story and its relevance to us today. You’ll learn about the two phases of the Dark Night—Purification and Surrender—and how to move through them. We’ll also discuss the process of being unable to resolve a situation and what happens to our ego and personality in the process. This is often where classic mistakes are made.
Tools of the First Phase: Entering the Dark Night
- Second Attention: Opening to the sacred through subtle signals and intuitive awareness.
- Creating Sacred Space: Building an altar for your daily sacred practices.
- Harmonising & Balancing: Making better choices by balancing doing and being.
- Soothing Body Energies: Managing anxiety and exhaustion by nurturing the body.
Session 2: Descent into the Dark: Journey to the Underworld (60 minutes)
By now we realise the situation is serious and the outcome unknown. There is the very real possibility of “not making it.” The idea of death comes to us. Something may die: A relationship, a person, our security, our known way of life.
What often dies are old beliefs, ungrounded fantasies and false projections. At this stage, we may struggle to find firm ground and may not know which way is up. But when we finally stop trying to fix or change things, the power of Letting Go happens. Surrender is not collapse, but yielding to circumstance, whilst holding a quiet inner strength at our core.
Mystic’s Journey: Entering the Deep Unknown. Goddess Code: Inanna: Part I
We share the fascinating tale of Goddess Inanna, as she undergoes her Dark Night ordeal in the Underworld, and how this ancient myth is applicable to us today as modern women. It is the tale of the momentary death of the ego, and the opening of the heart. Inanna’s meeting with her Underworld shadow sister, Ereshkigal, will change her forever.
Tools of the Second Phase: Descent into the Dark
- Simple Pleasures: The development of gratitude and appreciation for daily gifts.
- Support and Allies: Getting help from others. Opening up to support and assistance.
- Shadow Work: Meditations and journalling for healing our own underworld “dark sister.”
- Clearing and Cleansing: Releasing stuck energies and beliefs.
Session 3: Emerging from the Dark: Rising Dawn (60 minutes)
In this phase of the journey, we gratefully see the sun slowly rise again and feel the darkness receding, but still we are moving through the Dark Night. We need to be patient and allow life to show us the way, revealing our new path.
We are the butterfly who struggles to strengthen her wings by pushing against the chrysalis. We want to fly, to be reborn, but we must build our energy and power first. We are learning to wait, to be led by soul, not by ego.
We understand now about living from a deeper place inside of us, and are no longer are prepared to live a false life, or try to be what others want us to be. We are ready to live with renewed authenticity.
We also understand now the importance of prayer, meditation and reflective practice, as well as compassion and humility.
Mystic’s Journey: Inanna Part II: The Ascent: Return to the Upperworld
What happens when Inanna returns to the Upperworld? We share the ending of her story and what this means for us today as women.
How do we say “yes” to the challenges that are unavoidable in life? How do we embrace them as teachers on the path of personal transformation and empowerment?
In this final phase, there is relief of symptoms and surprising new growth spurts—the Spiritual Spring has started. Now we will be given another chance to apply what we have learned and expand our life.
Sacred Tools of the Third Phase: Emerging from the Dark
- Embracing the Dark: Loving our Moonflowers through Inner Life Practices.
- Compassionate Manifestation: Forming intentions that are soul-based, not ego-based.
- Radical Responsibility: Learning how to “use what happens” to grow and awaken.
- Building Foundations: Creating your Soul-Consciousness Team.
