Those voices in our heads that are never satisfied and always correcting us are actually forms of the inner critic, and from my work I know that many women have rather noisy and persistent inner critics!
The inner critic is something we all have to work on if we’re to BECOME EMPOWERED and move into authentic self-expression and truly follow our dreams.
But there is something more here: Our inner critic starts playing its old tapes and programs whenever we’re disconnected from higher guidance. It’s just our default program, unfortunately.
Most of us didn’t receive the kind of mentoring and life guidance we needed when we were young, and so we went out into the world having to figure things out on our own. We grew accustomed to this kind of journey, a journey that lacked guidance and soul mentoring. For many of us, it’s been a laborious process of trial-and-error.
Why We Need Inner Practices: This is why we need some form of regular inner reflection, meditation or journalling practice—to keep us TUNED INTO higher forms of guidance within us. Actually, most of our spiritual awakenings are all about discovering the wisdom that lives within us, and the higher forms of guidance that flow from our own heart’s intelligence and higher self. Higher guidance was there all along, but the noisy voice of the critic and old programs made it almost impossible to hear.
Higher guidance gently OVERWRITES the harsh and fearful messages of the critic with messages of love, compassion, healing and inspiration. This is what I mean by higher guidance—guidance that stems from the wisdom of our own awakened heart, and from the awakened hearts of others.
A Bad TV Commercial: When we’re not connected to higher guidance, guess what happens? The critic arrives to fill up the space, just like a bad TV commercial that always plays during the break—it’s pushy, repetitive and on auto-pilot, and it’s not where the SPIRITUAL ACTION is.
Whenever your critic shows up, perhaps use it as a PROMPT to connect with higher guidance right here, right now.
Positive Social Media: I think that many of us use social media because we’re hungry for positive guidance and mentoring. We just can’t get enough because it’s NOURISHMENT for the soul. We love reading and listening to other people expressing high-consciousness thoughts and compassionate wisdom. And we take comfort from this precisely because it reflects and validates our own inner guidance. Plus we need to know we’re not alone on our soul journey.
People sometimes criticise our current obsession with social media—and there’s merit to this argument—but many of us are using it for the RIGHT REASONS: Not to escape from reality, but to find higher forms of guidance that provide relief from the inner critic and old programs, and that offer ideas on how to empower and heal ourselves and move forward in our lives.
Hearing Our Own Soul Voice: For a long time now, I’ve felt called to help woman transform their inner critics by discovering their authentic soul voice, an inner voice that’s ALWAYS filled with love and that offers compassionate answers.
